This is the step-by-step process for building a fully automatic, rainwater catchment (DRIPCOIN) system.
1. Determine the Best Container for your Garden.
- Where will you place it?
- How much rainwater can it hold?
- How will it look?
2. Obtain a Permit
- Contact the local Planning Department to find what is needed to obtain a permit.
- Water is heavy! You will need an engineer to calculate the size and scope of a concrete pad to set underneath the container. Then it must be strapped safely in place in case of an earthquake.
- Additional plans must be made for overflow, when your container is full. Excess water must be redirected back into the municipal sewer system.
- Be aware of other code requirements which may apply to your system, such as the need for additional emergency drainage.
3. Hire a Team
- You will need an engineer to assess the loads, make calculations, and give his signature of approval in order to receive the permit.
- You will need a contractor, or a series of them, who can build a concrete pad, place and tie down the container, redirect your existing downspouts into the container, direct overflow safely to the sewer, install a pump for drip irrigation, and connect the system. Don’t be surprised if you require an hour of work from an electrician!
4. Order Supples
- Container
- Pumps
- Irrigation Supplies
